Most of the wines you find at the “Big Name” grocery stores are produced in huge quantities for National Distribution to a
mass-market. Naturally, the powers that be assume the market wants wines that do not require the consumer to give any thought to what they are drinking. In other words, wines that are simple, insipid, and uninspiring. We strive to discover wines that are interesting, multi-dimensional, and as natural as possible. As it turns out, these are generally produced in limited quantities by small, family-owned wineries that craft wines with love, attention and environmental stewardship . When you buy these wines you are paying for the wine in the bottle – not a multi-million dollar facility and a huge marketing budget.

Pilgrim’s wines are personally selected by Wine Steward Sam Lange. Sam favors regionally and family-produced wines and wineries that employ sustainable practices.

Pilgrim’s Beer selection boasts over 150 varieties from all over the world, including Northwest Micro-Brews, Imports and Organically produced beers and ales.

Pilgrim's Market Wine/Beer Tastings - Friday July 30th
(Updated every Thursday)

Joel will be joining us to taste an array of South American gems:

Finca Antigua Cabernet Sauvignon:
Although Sara and I had compiled our usual painstakingly thorough notes on this wine I have concluded, after reading the notes from the winery, that ours just seem to pale by comparison. Sure, we thought the wine showed some nice richness with a definite touch of sweet oak, but somehow that is not quite as intriguing as “The wine comes with some girth, having been reared for six months in American Oak. Notes milk and soothing memories of the variety, but always with the seal of Finca Antigua”.  There’s nothing like a little rearing in American Oak to give a wine some girth I always say. None of that pansy French Oak for this baby. Super size my Cabernet! And although we thought the wine had a nice bit of tannic structure we never thought to say “it has a robust attack on the palate with great structure at its initiation and development of volume of horizontal and vertical sense”. Now, I have to admit, I have occasionally referred to a wine as being expansive or even broad but I don’t believe I have ever thought of wine as being tall. Perhaps I am being too literal. Actually, this is starting to give me a headache. I imagine I should just kick-back and relax and stop trying to figure it out. Maybe I should try and focus on some soothing memories of the variety.

By the way, we will also be sampling the wines of Big Fat Llama. Specifically the Chardonnay, the Merlot, and the Cabernet Sauvignon. Also from Chile, these are easy drinking summer quaffers offer at the great price of just $7.50/ bottle.

Cheers,

Sam and Sara

A bottle of white? A bottle of red? Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead?

“A bottle of white? A bottle of red? Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead?” Not so many years ago (Billy Joel wrote those lyrics in 1977) white, red, or pink were about the extent of the wine offerings at many local eateries. Today’s Northwest wine scene is a world apart from those humble beginnings, due, in large part, to the growth of the Washington wine industry. It is now the second largest in the country. It’s not uncommon to open a wine list these days and be confronted with a choice of half a dozen Northwest Viogniers. VIOGNIERS for crying out loud! In the course of one week I recently tasted a Petite Verdot, a Carmenere, a single vineyard Counoise, and the usual assortment of Black Muscats, Rousannes, and the like. Many of our local wineries have jumped into the fray by offering unique wines made from lesser-known grape varieties. A recent tour of nearby tasting rooms uncovered a wealth of opportunities to sample these intriguing wines.
