Spirulina Improves Life for People with Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder in which oxidative stress and inflammation play key roles. Spirulina is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Is it powerful enough to improve the lives of people with MS?

This triple-blind, placebo-controlled study gave 64 people with relapsing-remitting MS either a placebo or 1g of spirulina a day for 12 weeks.

The spirulina significantly reduced IL-1β and IL-6, two markers of inflammation, compared to placebo. The spirulina also significantly improved the people’s perception of their health, as well as improving physical function, reducing role limitations due to physical problems, increasing energy, and improving sexual function. There was also significant weight loss in the spirulina group compared to the placebo group.

The spirulina was very safe, with even (nonsignificantly) fewer adverse events than the placebo group.

The researchers conclude that “[g]iven its safety profile and potential cost-effectiveness, spirulina represents a promising adjunct therapy for MS management.”
