Spring ‘Greening’ Your Home with Pilgrim’s Products

By Jessica Freeborn

Spring time provides a fresh start. An opportunity to open windows, invite nature into our homes, and to liven up inside dwellings that have been closed up for most of the cold winter months. Here are some Pilgrim’s tips on how to spring “green” your home.

Purify The Air

The air within our home can harbor harmful bacteria, microbial dust and chemicals. A great way to purify the air in your space is to bring in houseplants. In the late 80s, NASA and The Associated Landscape Contractors of America studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space facilities. They found several plants that naturally absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but certain plants they found can also help eliminate significant amounts of harmful chemical found in housing material such as benzene, formaldehyde and/or trichloroethylene. Our gift department has a great assortment of beautiful houseplants and topiaries that are not only aesthetically appealing but also aid in purifying the air you breathe. Sunlight also has a purifying effect and of course houseplants require daylight exposure. Weather permitting, open the windows for fresh air and let the sun shine in! Generic household room sprays and air fresheners unfortunately often contain chemicals and artificial fragrances that can be harmful to our health. Swap out the chemical laden cleaners with our Pilgrim’s Market room sprays. Our formulas contain only essential oils and all natural ingredients. Not only do these room sprays smell amazing, they can help rid your indoor environment of viruses and bacteria. Or you can make your own blend with our in-house essential oils. See the Supplement Department for DIY room spray recipes.

Pink Himalayan Salt Lamps also work as an air purifier. When lit, the lamp emits negative ions that fight against positively charged particles that can make you feel sluggish and tired. Not only do these lamps create a relaxing ambience, they also clear the air of allergens like smoke, pet dander, pollens and other pollutants. Regular paraffin candles are petroleum derived and can release harmful chemicals like benzene, toluene, soot and other chemicals into the air. Pure Beeswax candles on the other hand, burn with almost no smoke or scent and clean the air by releasing negative ions. These negative ions can bind with toxins and help remove them from the air. Diffusers filled with your favorite essential oils can also help in purifying the home as well as creating an aromatic quality that can uplift the mood. For its antiseptic qualities, I enjoy diffusing a blend of clove, orange, cinnamon and tea tree oil in my kitchen. Less is more with essential oils so make sure you are diluting them with water or a carrier oil such as olive oil. Clean up your Cleaning Agents Other ways to keep your household ecofriendly is to make sure your detergents and cleaning agents are chemical free. Pilgrim’s Market carries a great selection of natural cleaners and detergents that are tough on dirt yet gentle on the environment and your household members. Some of my favorite cleaning products that you can find at Pilgrim’s Market include Mrs. Meyers Laundry and dish soap (The Rose Geranium is my favorite scent!)

Ditch the Plastic!

Not only is the overuse of plastic harming human health, it also is finding its way into our water grid and oceans. If we all make an effort to eliminate the single use plastic in our everyday lives, the healthier our home and planet will be. Here at Pilgrims we have a lot of reusable plastic-free options. Stasher brand reusable silicone pouches are a great way to store snacks and leftovers. Beeswax wraps can easily replace plastic wrap and they can be rinsed and reused. Plus, they have adorable prints and patterns! Hydroflask stainless steel bottles can hold any beverage hot or cold and are durable to take on the go. Also, consider making your own cleaning sprays and using reusable containers. Buying in bulk is not only economical but it is a great way to reduce the use of plastic packaging. We carry a great selection of not only bulk foods but also bulk soaps, and body care!
